ILL - Request Materials from Another Location

Note: If you are student, faculty or staff of DBU, please contact your campus librarian for help with getting materials that are not at your campus.

When you use the library’s interlibrary loan service, you have access to library materials from all of the Globe University/Minnesota School of Business/Broadview University/IPR  libraries. The interlibrary loan (ILL) service can also help you to retrieve library materials from other libraries.

How to submit an interlibrary loan request:

  1. Make sure you are an eligible patron for ILL services. You must have an active and unblocked library account to request items. See your local  librarian with questions.
  2. Read over the materials not requested policy statements. Some types of materials cannot be requested through the ILL service.
  3. Check the Online Catalog for the book.

NOTE: If you are looking for a book that isn’t owned by any GEN library, use the pull-down menu on the top-left of the catalog to select “All libraries.” Please note the restrictions in the materials not requested statements.

What if I can’t find what I want in the Online Catalog?

How to check on the status of an ILL request

  • The amount of time an ILL request takes to arrive depends on the lending library.
    • A book from another GEN library will take about 3-7 days to arrive.
    • A book from outside of the GEN libraries may take up to a few weeks to arrive.
  • You will receive notification by email when your request has arrived or if it is not possible for us to retrieve your request. Make sure the GEN library has your email on file.
  • You can also check “your borrowing record” on the Online Catalog for the status of your ILL request.
  • Send questions to your local GEN librarian.

Eligible patrons

Students:

All students who are currently enrolled at the GEN schools AND have an active and unblocked library account are eligible for the ILL service.

Staff:

Staff of GEN who have an active and unblocked library account are eligible for the ILL service.

Faculty:

Faculty of GEN who have an active and unblocked library account are eligible for the ILL service.

Contact your local GEN librarian with questions about your status. Please make sure that the library has your email address on file because we will be using email to contact you about your ILL request.

Materials not requested through ILL

  • Materials that will not be borrowed include, but are not limited to:
    • Reference materials,
    • Books and articles available full-text through the GEN databases,
    • Textbooks for GEN classes,
    • Materials that are owned by GEN,
    • Materials that are “in use” by another patron,
    • Rare materials, or
    • whole issues of periodicals.
    • Audiovisual materials can only be borrowed by patrons with Faculty status.
  • Circulation restrictions apply to ILL borrowing restrictions.
  • Photocopies of periodical articles are subject to copyright restrictions (Title 17, U.S. Code and “CONTU guidelines”).
  • The Interlibrary Loan Librarian will evaluate special circumstances, case-by-case.

Patron Responsibilities

  • The patron who is using the ILL service is responsible for lost, damaged, or overdue material that is checked out on his or her library account.
  • The patron is responsible for returning all ILL materials to a campus library. GEN fee and fine policies for circulation apply to ILL.
  • The patron is responsible for requesting a renewal before the due date by accessing his/her library account through the Online Catalog or by your local GEN librarian, if a renewal is desired. Holds placed by other patrons before the renewal is requested will have priority over a renewal. Renewals are not guaranteed because they depend upon the policy of the lending library.
  • The patron is responsible for checking his or her email account for correspondence from the GEN campus libraries regarding ILL materials.

Renewals

  • Renewals can be requested for ILL materials. To request a renewal, log on to “your borrowing record” in the Online Catalog or contact your local GEN librarian.
  • Renewals are not guaranteed because they depend upon the policy of the lending library.

Overdues

  • You will be notified of overdue materials through your email account.
  • There are no fines for overdue materials.
  • If you have an overdue ILL item, a HOLD will be placed on your student record and a BLOCK placed on your library record. This will affect your ability to register for classes, request transcripts, and check out library materials. This is the same as the circulation policy.
  • Contact your local GEN librarian with questions.

Costs

  • GEN assumes the costs of operating and maintaining the ILL service.
  • There are no fines for overdue materials.
  • In accordance with the GEN libraries circulation policy, the patron is responsible for replacement costs for lost or damaged materials.

Interlibrary loan and course reserves

  • Faculty may not place ILL materials that must be returned on “Course Reserve.”
