Spotlight On: RSS Readers
Many websites have RSS feeds. Basically the website will send data to your RSS reader (or sometimes called “aggregator”), informing you of an update to its website. In other words, you do not have to not visit a website constantly to find if there is a new article, podcast, video, etc.
News websites will have many RSS feeds to choose from. So, if you are interested only when a particular author writes a new column, some websites have an RSS feed for that.
Microsoft created a helpful guide to understanding RSS readers. You may also like to view this short video about RSS readers from Common Craft. All the newest web browsers have RSS reading capabilities. Generally, there should be an orange square icon (blue RSS icon for Safari) in the address bar. Click the icon and it will be part your RSS reader.
These browsers have built in RSS readers:
- Internet Explorer 7.0
- Firefox 2.0
- Opera Browser 9.0
- Safari 2.0 (Mac)
There are websites, like Yahoo! and Google that have RSS readers, too. This is great if you want to have access to your RSS feeds anywhere in the world.
Finally, there is RSS reader software. These are more complex than browsers and website RSS readers. If you become an RSS reader fan, you might want to check out one of the many free RSS reader software out there. To choose which one is right for you, consult About.com’s review of many RSS readers.
