Citing sources is a major part of academic work. People own their thoughts and ideas, like they own cars and houses. And just like those tangible things, stealing ideas (plagiarism) is wrong and can have negative consequences. On the other hand, scholars who write books and articles want their ideas to be used – it makes them look good and continues the process of creating knowledge. In order to use other people’s ideas correctly, you must cite their work.
Citing consists of two parts :
1. In-Text references throughout your paper
2. References Page (or bibliography) at the end of your paper.
In your paper, whenever you quote someone else, paraphrase their writing, or otherwise use information from an outside source (i.e. not your brain) you need to tell your readers where that idea came from. This is done in short parenthetical notes. For instructions on this, click on the In Text link above.
At the end of your paper, you will make a list of all the sources you used to write the paper. Every source that you cite in-text must be on this list. For instruction on how to create your list, click on the References link above.
